Mom working with toddler on her lap
Mom working with toddler on her lap

Are you an entrepreneurial mom who has already started her freelancing business but is now questioning if your current niche is the right fit? Of course you are, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this blog post, am I right?

Don't worry - you're not alone! Many mompreneurs face this challenge even after they've launched, and in fact I spoke with one recently who was dealing with this exact issue. She had taken a break from freelancing but was ready to dive back in, the only problem? She was stuck in start mode!

This mama had tons of experience in her industry but for some reason she felt paralyzed by doubt, which kept her from choosing the niche she really wanted to try. Instead, she started marketing herself as something totally different because she recognized it was high in-demand, but deep down she wasn't sure it was the right fit for her.

Through our conversation we dug a little deeper and found her biggest fear, which was the reason she didn't give herself permission to go after that desired niche in the first place: Failing and not having all her ducks in a row. Sound familiar?

One of the first things we discussed was the importance of shifting her mindset. It's natural to feel nervous about the unknown, but focusing on the excitement of what could be is crucial. Trying out a niche, even if it’s not perfect, is part of the journey. You learn so much about yourself and your business by taking action, even if it feels messy at first.

I asked her what she needed to hear in order to feel more confident about embracing her desired niche, and she said "I guess I just want someone to say: this is THE thing you are going to rock at."

While validation from others can be helpful, the most important opinion is your own. You need to decide what you love and what you’re great at. With her past experience and self-belief, she already knew she was capable. In fact, that was something that she expressed loudly when asking for advice in the first place.

Because she already believed in her own abilities, I told her that the clarity she was searching for wasn't about what she could do for people, but rather WHO she could do it for, and if she knew how to find them she would feel more confident about putting herself out there as this particular expert.

Now, if any of this is resonating with YOU.... Then I want to give you the same advice I gave to this mama.

Here are the steps I suggested to help her move forward in her chosen niche, tailored to fit your current situation as an experienced freelancer:

1. Reevaluate Your Niche: Reflect on your areas of expertise and passion. Are you truly enjoying what you’re doing, or is there another niche that excites you more?

2. Experiment and Adjust: Don’t be afraid to try out different niches. Sometimes, the best way to find your fit is through hands-on experience.

3. Shift Your Mindset: Embrace the excitement of discovering what could be, rather than fearing the unknown.

4. Clarify Your Audience: Get specific about who you want to serve and where to find them. Knowing your target audience can make a huge difference in what you do next.

5. Trust Your Skills: Remember your past successes and experiences. You are more than capable of succeeding in whichever niche you choose. And even more importantly, you yourself already know this to be true. So instead of waiting for someone else to tell you "you'll rock at this", say it out loud in a mirror and go for it!

By following these steps, you can move from doubting your niche to confidently navigating your freelancing journey. Remember, taking action often leads to clarity and success. So, take that leap and start exploring your potential today!
